This original, Beni Ourain natural wool and cotton blend rug, has been handmade by the Berber Women in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

Many rugs are pure wool but, in fact,  combining the world with cotton makes the weave both tighter and stronger, so the rug is actually more durable when blended with cotton.

Moroccan rugs are always made by the women in the community. Handwoven on a loom, each woman creates her own designs and patterns – no two rugs are ever the same. The women work with the ‘back of the rug’ facing them and as the rug is created it is ‘rolled’ so the women actually can’t see the work as it progresses! It is always a surprise to see how it turns out at the end!

It is important to note that, due to the hand making process on the loom it is actually very difficult to get the width of the rug to be consistently even. The more experienced women can keep their weave the same tension, however you may note that the rugs may actually taper at one end. Again this is simply a characteristic of a handmade traditional process – as opposed to the precision a machine made item can achieve…. Its dimensions are part of the mountain story from where your rug originated…

This mustard yellow and cream pattern rug is approximately 2.31 x 1.58 m excluding the tassels.
